How to Cook Tangyuan

Tangyuan, also known as glutinous rice balls, is a traditional Chinese dessert often eaten during festivals like the Lantern Festival and Winter Solstice. Here is a simple guide on how to cook tangyuan:

  • Glutinous rice flour
  • Water
  • Filling of your choice (such as red bean paste, black sesame paste, or peanut paste)
  • Optional: food coloring for colorful tangyuan

  • Make the dough:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine glutinous rice flour with water to form a smooth dough. Adjust the water amount as needed to achieve the right consistency.
  • If desired, add food coloring to the dough and knead until the color is evenly distributed.
  • Shape the tangyuan:

  • Take a small portion of dough and flatten it in your palm.
  • Place a small amount of filling in the center of the dough.
  • Gently shape the dough into a ball, making sure the filling is completely covered.
  • Cook the tangyuan:

  • Bring a pot of water to boil.
  • Drop the tangyuan into the boiling water.
  • Stir the tangyuan gently to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Once the tangyuan float to the surface, let them cook for another 12 minutes.
  • Serve:

  • Remove the cooked tangyuan from the water using a slotted spoon.
  • Serve the tangyuan hot in a bowl with some of the cooking water or in sweet soup.
  • Enjoy your delicious homemade tangyuan!
